McDonald’s Shuts Down CosMc’s Locations Nationwide

McDonald’s has ended its short-lived CosMc’s experiment, closing the door on a beverage-focused concept that launched in Illinois in December 2023 and later expanded into Texas. The standalone chain was created to test whether McDonald’s could build a new kind of drink-driven restaurant around specialty beverages, quick snacks, and a colorful, space-themed identity. But after less than two years in operation, the company decided to wind down all five locations.

CosMc’s stood out from a typical McDonald’s restaurant with its blue-and-yellow décor, celestial branding, and a menu built around custom drinks. Among the most talked-about offerings were the French Toast Galaxy Latte and Pistachio Swirl Shaken Espresso, beverages designed to attract customers looking for something more inventive than standard coffee or soda. The menu also included breakfast sandwiches, pretzel bites, and soft-serve desserts, giving the concept a broader café-style appeal.

Despite the attention it received, CosMc’s did not develop a strong enough long-term customer base to continue operating as a separate chain. McDonald’s announced in May 2025 that the locations would close in stages, with the full shutdown scheduled for June 23, 2025. The company thanked customers for trying the concept and encouraged rewards members to use remaining points before the final closure date.

The end of CosMc’s does not mean McDonald’s is abandoning beverage innovation. Instead, the company says the concept served as a valuable test kitchen for future ideas. McDonald’s plans to study what worked at CosMc’s and use those lessons to inform new drink offerings inside its existing restaurants. That could mean bringing back popular beverage ideas, testing new flavors, or improving the way drinks are prepared and served across the brand.

The closure reflects a broader challenge in the fast-food industry: while specialty drinks can generate excitement, they must also prove they can scale profitably and win repeat visits. CosMc’s gave McDonald’s a chance to explore that market without changing its core menu, but the concept appears to have worked better as an experiment than as a permanent business.

Still, the chain’s brief run may have lasting influence. McDonald’s has signaled that it will continue pursuing beverage growth, and the ideas developed during the CosMc’s trial could help shape the company’s next wave of drinks. In that sense, CosMc’s may be ending, but its impact on McDonald’s future menu strategy is likely to continue.
