Britney Spears Criticizes “Mean Girls” in Cryptic Instagram Posts

Britney Spears has shared a series of cryptic Instagram messages that appear to reference “mean girls,” people laughing at her, and feeling watched or talked about behind her back. In one post on Friday, May 29, Spears wrote, “If you’re one of those mean girls pointing and laughing and looking at your phone in the audience just look up today… River sends you guys a message!!!!!!!!” In another post the same day, she danced beside a pool and wrote about changing her name after moving out of the country, adding that “the mean girls stopped laughing” and that she missed that time.
It is not clear who Spears is referring to in the posts. In a separate message shared on Tuesday, May 26, she said there is sometimes “too much chatter” going on behind someone’s back and suggested that this feeling can affect people emotionally. Spears said she still sends love to those people, but also asked for respect for her “spiritual journey.” She added that she hoped the media would stop posting “embarrassing things” from her past and ended the post by mentioning she had bought “adorable high heeled sandals” for summer.
The posts come after Spears faced legal trouble earlier this year. She was taken into police custody on March 4 after an anonymous caller reported that she had been “traveling at high speeds and swerving.” After the arrest, she was taken to a local hospital for blood testing, and her blood alcohol level was reportedly under the legal limit.
A spokesperson for Spears said in March that the incident was “an unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable” situation. The statement said Spears would take the right steps, comply with the law, and get the help and support she needed during what was described as a difficult time.
The following month, Spears was charged in connection with driving under the influence while in a treatment facility. On May 4, she accepted a plea deal. As part of the sentence, she received 12 months of probation and one day in jail, with credit for time served. She was also ordered to complete a DUI class, pay $571 in state-mandated fees, and see a psychologist once a week and a psychiatrist twice a month.
Spears’ latest posts appear to reflect frustration with public attention and media coverage as she continues to address events from the past.
