Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Family: A Complete Guide
Dave Olsen and Jarnette Olsen were not initially eager for their twin daughters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, to enter the entertainment industry. In a 1991 interview with The Washington Post, Dave Olsen said he had not wanted to be involved in the idea when a talent agency was approached with a photo of the twins, reportedly at the suggestion of a family friend. He said that if Jarnette wanted to pursue it, he was willing to go along with it.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen went on to begin their acting careers by sharing the role of Michelle Tanner on the television series Full House when they were 9 months old. The sitcom became a major hit throughout the 1990s, but the twins later said they did not grow up under pressure from their parents to become stars. Ashley Olsen said in a 2004 appearance on The Late Show that they were fortunate to have parents who did not push them in that direction.
As their careers expanded, Dave and Jarnette Olsen were involved in helping manage the twins’ finances, including the revenue from their entertainment and merchandise company, Dualstar, before Mary-Kate and Ashley turned 18. Dave Olsen told the Los Angeles Times in 2000 that he received large numbers of memos each day involving contracts and business matters connected to the twins’ growing empire.
Their younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, later said in 2012 that their parents had limited involvement in the actual day-to-day work of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s careers after helping them get their first job. She said their parents focused on connecting the twins with the right professionals to manage the demands of child stardom, assets, and production work, while recognizing they were not experts in those areas themselves.
Dave and Jarnette Olsen later divorced in the mid-1990s. Dave Olsen eventually remarried McKenzie Olsen.
The Olsen family’s role in the twins’ early success has remained part of the broader story of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s rise from child actors to major entertainment figures and business owners.
