Anna Kalinskaya defeats Anastasia Potapova in third-set tiebreak to reach Roland Garros quarterfinals

Anna Kalinskaya produced one of the most dramatic wins of her career at Roland Garros, outlasting No. 28 seed Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7) in a tense 2-hour, 49-minute battle on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The No. 22 seed said she was “shocked” that the match had finished, reflecting the emotional and physical strain of a contest filled with momentum swings and missed chances.
Kalinskaya had to recover from 4-1 down in the opening set to steal the lead, only for Potapova to respond by taking the second set and forcing a deciding third. The final set followed the same pattern of pressure and resilience, with Potapova again moving ahead 4-1 before Kalinskaya fought back. In the super-tiebreak, Kalinskaya also overcame a 4-1 deficit, showing composure at the key moments to close out the match.
Potapova, however, had her own opportunities to end the contest. She served for the match twice, once at 5-4 and again at 6-5 in the third set, but could not convert either chance. Kalinskaya stayed alive by settling her nerves, regrouping, and finding a better rhythm when the pressure was at its highest.
The match was a scrappy, error-heavy affair, with both players struggling to maintain control for long stretches. Kalinskaya finished with 58 unforced errors, while Potapova committed 49. Each player hit 32 winners, underlining how tightly contested the encounter was and how much the outcome depended on mental strength rather than clean shot-making.
For Kalinskaya, the victory sends her into only the fifth clay-court quarterfinal of her career and just her second on red clay, after Strasbourg in 2025. It also improves her head-to-head record against Potapova to 3-0. More importantly, it gives her another chance to break new ground at a Grand Slam, as she moves within one win of a first major semifinal.
Kalinskaya’s next opponent will be either France’s Diane Parry or qualifier Maja Chwalinska, and she will look to continue the momentum from a match she described as especially difficult and memorable. She said Potapova had improved significantly and made the contest “super challenging,” but credited her own ability to relax and reset when the match appeared to be slipping away.
The result added another unpredictable chapter to this year’s Roland Garros, where Kalinskaya’s persistence and calm in the decisive moments proved enough to turn a brutal, high-pressure match in her favor.
