Jill Scott Begins Cycling Challenge in Warwickshire on First Leg

A former footballer is nearing the end of an endurance challenge for Sport Relief after cycling and running across several parts of England to raise money for children’s access to sport and community projects. She said her own childhood experience of being able to play sport shaped her decision to take part, and that she wants every child to have the same opportunity.
She explained that the challenge is intended to be demanding because a major effort is needed to encourage people to donate and make a difference. In her view, Sport Relief plays an important role in supporting youth work, community centres and other local projects that can change lives. She said she had seen that impact personally and remembered relying on such places when she was younger, before going on to pursue her dream of becoming a footballer.
The challenge has included visits to several football clubs and community locations, including Aston Villa, Everton, Manchester City and Bishop Auckland FC Ladies. Along the route, she said the public response has been encouraging, with crowds, posters and messages of support helping her continue despite the physical strain. She noted that after covering around 75 miles, the bike seat had begun to hurt, but said the reaction from people had been overwhelming and had helped carry her through.
Her final stage is due on Friday, when she will complete a 28-mile marathon finish to the Stadium of Light. The effort is part of a wider fundraising push for Sport Relief, with the aim of highlighting the value of sport in giving children confidence, opportunity and support through community-based programmes.
