Jill Biden Feared Joe Biden Was Having a Stroke During 2024 Debate Disaster
In the aftermath of the June 2024 presidential debate, concerns intensified about President Joe Biden’s cognitive health and whether the then-81-year-old leader was fit to serve another four-year term. The debate performance triggered a wave of unease within the Democratic Party, with some lawmakers privately and publicly questioning whether Biden should remain the party’s nominee. The discussion quickly shifted from campaign strategy to Biden’s age, stamina, and ability to carry out the demands of the presidency.
Among the most prominent voices to speak out was longtime Democratic supporter and fundraiser George Clooney. In a New York Times essay published on July 10, 2024, titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee,” Clooney described his reaction to Biden’s condition after seeing him at a fundraiser weeks earlier. Clooney said the president he encountered was not the same Joe Biden he had known in previous years, including the version of Biden who had appeared energetic and sharp in earlier public moments. He wrote that the man seen at the debate closely matched the one he had observed at the fundraiser, and argued that Democrats would not win the election with Biden at the top of the ticket.
The pressure on Biden continued to build in the days that followed. On July 21, 2024, Biden announced he was ending his reelection campaign, saying the decision was made in the “best interest of my party and the country.” His withdrawal marked a major turning point in the 2024 race and came after weeks of mounting scrutiny from allies, donors, and lawmakers who feared that his candidacy had become politically untenable.
Following Biden’s exit, Vice President Kamala Harris was elevated to lead the Democratic ticket after receiving Biden’s endorsement and the support of delegates. Her rapid rise transformed the campaign landscape, forcing Democrats to reorganize around a new nominee in a compressed time frame. Harris ultimately became the party’s standard-bearer in the general election, but the transition did not produce the result Democrats had hoped for.
In November 2024, Harris lost to Donald Trump in a decisive presidential election. Trump won a second term in office by carrying all seven battleground states, delivering a commanding victory that underscored the scale of the Republican comeback. The outcome capped a turbulent stretch for Democrats that began with the debate backlash, continued through Biden’s withdrawal, and ended with a sweeping defeat at the ballot box.
The episode remains a defining moment in the 2024 election cycle, highlighting how one debate performance, paired with growing doubts about a sitting president’s age and fitness, reshaped the race and altered the Democratic Party’s path to the White House.
