Fan Frenzy at Crowded China Mall Forces Zhang Linghe Event Online Over Safety Concerns
Chinese actor Zhang Linghe’s planned appearance at a Molsion eyewear event in Nanning, Guangxi, on May 31 was cancelled after an unexpectedly large crowd created safety concerns and forced organisers to move the programme online. Thousands of fans gathered at a shopping mall hours before the event, hoping to see the star of the 2026 C-drama Pursuit Of Jade. As the day went on, the crowd grew denser across several levels of the venue, with social media videos showing packed walkways and balconies. Reports also said one of the mall’s glass entrance doors was damaged during the rush.
Organisers later announced on Weibo that Zhang would not appear in person, saying the decision was made to protect public safety and avoid possible injuries. Instead, the event was shifted to a livestream featuring Zhang, who became a brand ambassador for Molsion in April and was scheduled to promote the eyewear company’s latest products remotely.
The scene in Nanning highlighted Zhang’s growing popularity and the intense public response he continues to draw at appearances. The 28-year-old actor has built a large following through hit Chinese dramas including Love Between Fairy And Devil (2022), Story Of Kunning Palace (2023) and The Princess Royal (2024). His profile expanded further after Pursuit Of Jade became a success, introducing him to a wider international audience and strengthening his reputation as one of China’s most in-demand young performers.
The Nanning incident was not the first time Zhang’s presence has sparked major fan turnouts. Previous brand promotions, drama-related events and even airport arrivals have drawn large crowds, with videos of supporters screaming his name and filling venues often circulating widely online. His recent appearance at the GucciCore Cruise 2027 event in New York City also attracted significant attention, with fans gathering at JFK Airport ahead of his arrival. Before he reached the city on May 16, admirers even purchased digital billboard space in Times Square to welcome him.
The latest disruption adds to a pattern that reflects Zhang’s strong commercial appeal and the level of enthusiasm he commands among fans. It also underscores the growing challenge event organisers face when managing public appearances by major celebrities whose popularity can quickly overwhelm venues and require last-minute changes for safety reasons.
