Globo colleagues unite in video tribute to Luís Roberto: “You are the most ridiculous among the ridiculous”

Globo’s sports team gathered to honor broadcaster Luís Roberto, who turned 65 on Friday, May 29, with a tribute shared on the network’s social media channels. The messages came from colleagues who will be part of the coverage of the next World Cup and included words of encouragement and support as Roberto continues treatment for a cancer diagnosis in the cervical region. He has been away from broadcasts since April, when he announced his medical leave.
In the video, fellow announcer Everaldo Marques sent a heartfelt message to Roberto, saying the familiar voice loved by Brazilians was now being used to wish him a quick recovery. Marques, who has been chosen to lead Globo’s World Cup coverage during Roberto’s absence, also added a lighter remark referencing one of Roberto’s well-known catchphrases, telling him to return soon and calling him “the greatest among the greatest” in a playful show of affection.
Commentator Caio Ribeiro also recorded a message for his colleague, expressing confidence that Roberto would recover and return to work sooner than expected, healthy and strong. The tribute reflected the close relationship among Globo’s sports professionals and the importance Roberto has had in the broadcaster’s sports division over the years.
Luís Roberto joined Globo in the late 1990s and gradually became one of the network’s most recognizable sports voices. At the start of his career there, he was mainly associated with matches involving Rio de Janeiro clubs, while other major broadcasters covered teams from São Paulo and Brazil’s national team. His role expanded significantly after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when he gained more high-profile assignments and became increasingly central to Globo’s sports programming.
His status grew further after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when Cléber Machado and Galvão Bueno left Globo following the tournament. Roberto then became the network’s leading sports narrator, with expectations that he would again anchor coverage of the Brazilian national team at this year’s World Cup.
Those plans changed in April, when Roberto stepped away from transmissions to undergo treatment after being diagnosed with a neoplasm. Globo has indicated that he is expected to remain off air until the end of the year. In his absence, Everaldo Marques has been selected as the main voice of the tournament and will narrate Brazil’s opening match as well as other major games, including the final. The tribute from Globo’s sports team served both as a birthday celebration and as a public show of solidarity with one of the company’s most important broadcasters during a difficult health battle.
