Dark Horse Comics to Close Things From Another World Retail Stores in Oregon

Dark Horse Comics will close two Oregon retail stores operated under Things From Another World on June 30, with locations in Milwaukie and Beaverton set to shut down, according to an announcement made Thursday. The company also plans to close its California store at Universal CityWalk in Universal Studios on September 30. Dark Horse, which has deep roots in Oregon, said the decision was difficult and acknowledged the impact on employees and customers affected by the closures.
In a statement on its website, the company said it does not take the changes lightly and will provide support to workers during the transition. Dark Horse said it is working to handle the process with care and respect. The closures are part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at modernizing the company, strengthening collaboration, and building a more connected organization across Fellowship Entertainment.
Alongside the store closures, Dark Horse announced a new initiative called Dark Horse Games. The company said the division will focus on helping creators develop projects and form creative partnerships in interactive entertainment. The move signals an expansion beyond comics and into gaming-related storytelling and development opportunities.
The Milwaukie store, long considered a flagship location, drew reaction from local comic fans who said the closure will be felt in the community. Josh Fineberg, who lives near the store, told KATU he grew up reading comics and described the news as disheartening. He said the shop has been a staple in Milwaukie and that losing it would mean losing a piece of the city’s identity. He also expressed concern about where he would buy comics after the store closes.
Dark Horse is known for publishing popular titles including “Hellboy” and “Umbrella Academy.” The company said the changes are intended to position it for the future while it adjusts its retail footprint. In March, Jay Komas replaced Richardson as chief executive officer, marking a leadership change before the latest restructuring announcement.
The closures come as many specialty retail businesses continue to reassess physical store operations while expanding digital and entertainment-focused strategies. For local readers and longtime customers, the end of the Milwaukie and Beaverton stores marks the loss of familiar comic-book destinations, while the launch of Dark Horse Games suggests the company is shifting more of its attention toward new creative opportunities.
