Euphoria Airs Series Finale as Some Stars Did Not Return

HBO’s Euphoria has officially ended after seven years, three seasons, and 26 episodes, with creator Sam Levinson confirming that the Season 3 finale, “In God We Trust,” was the series finale. The announcement, later confirmed by HBO to Variety, turned what viewers believed was a season-ending episode into the final chapter of one of television’s most widely discussed dramas. The ending closes a run that began as a raw and stylized portrait of teenage life and evolved into a major cultural phenomenon shaped by its cast, intense storytelling, and often divisive tone.

The finale delivers one of the show’s most shocking outcomes: Rue, played by Zendaya, dies after a fentanyl overdose. The death occurs after Rue learns that Maddy previously exposed her DEA connection, leading to a chain of events involving her dealer, identified in the story as Alamo. He gives Rue painkillers laced with fentanyl, and she overdoses. The episode briefly shows her in a hallucinatory state, imagining her mother before ending in a quiet and tragic scene on Ali’s couch. In the morning, Ali finds her dead. The choice reflects the show’s unflinching depiction of addiction and the harsh realities faced by people trapped in cycles of dependency.

After Rue’s death, Ali takes revenge and confronts Alamo at his bar. The sequence ends with betrayal from Bishop, who swaps Alamo’s gun for an empty one, allowing Ali to shoot him three times. Colman Domingo’s performance is highlighted as a major emotional anchor in the final episode, bringing intensity and gravity to the closing moments of the series.

Other characters are left with unresolved pain and loss. Jules appears briefly without dialogue and does not share a final scene with Rue. Lexi struggles with the consequences of losing Rue to drugs, while Cassie continues on her own path without fully confronting the truth surrounding Nate. Earlier in the season, Nate Jacobs had already died after being bitten by a rattlesnake while buried underground, making the finale’s body count even higher and underscoring the season’s bleak tone.

Zendaya has previously spoken about the importance of the show in her life, saying that Euphoria “cracked my heart open” and taught her about empathy and redemption. The series followed a group of high school students dealing with drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love, and friendship. In its final season, after a time jump, it expanded into themes of faith, redemption, and evil, answering those questions with the same uncompromising style that defined the show from the beginning.

With its final episode, Euphoria ends as a landmark drama remembered for its emotional intensity, visual style, and willingness to confront painful subject matter without softening the impact.
