Euphoria Creator Sam Levinson and Cast Tease Season 3 Finale

In the final episode of HBO’s Euphoria, creator Sam Levinson chose a tragic ending for Rue Bennett, saying a happy conclusion would not have felt truthful to the story he wanted to tell. In a behind-the-scenes video released after the series finale, Levinson said the “honest ending” for someone like Rue is that “people like Rue don’t make it,” pointing to the realities of relapse, addiction, and the growing danger of fentanyl in the United States.

The finale shows Rue, played by Zendaya, dying from a fentanyl overdose after relapsing on laced Percocet provided by Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Levinson connected that storyline to the death of former cast member Angus Cloud, who played Fezco O’Neill and died in 2023, as well as his own experience with addiction earlier in life. He said he believed that if he had been facing the same circumstances when he was younger, he likely would not have survived. He described the storyline as a way to honor Cloud and others who did not get a second chance.

Levinson said Zendaya’s performance across the series made Rue a character viewers deeply cared about, even when she made destructive choices. That emotional bond, he said, made Rue’s death especially difficult to accept. Still, he argued that the show’s goal was not to offer comfort or a conventional television ending. Rue dies about 45 minutes into the finale, but the story continues, reflecting Levinson’s belief that Euphoria should not follow a “normal” or “sane” structure.

After Rue’s death, Ali, her sponsor, discovers her body the next morning and finds the fentanyl-laced pills. Colman Domingo’s character then seeks revenge, and after months of trying to grieve in a traditional way through AA meetings, sponsorship, and faith, Ali ultimately leaves that path behind. He later removes part of his shotgun barrel and kills Alamo in a violent confrontation at the Silver Slipper. Domingo said the storyline gave Ali a chance to move beyond his usual scenes with Zendaya and interact more broadly with the show’s world.

Elsewhere in the finale, the other characters are also left in unstable and painful situations. Cassie and Maddy are facing financial trouble while trying to deal with Nate’s death. Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie’s characters are shown as deeply connected by shared hardship, with Levinson describing them as the true love story of Season 3 because they have little else except each other and mounting debt.

Lexi, played by Maude Apatow, is shaken after reading the Bible Rue left in her apartment and begins questioning her place in the world. She attempts to open up to Cassie, but the sisters remain emotionally distant. Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, is also grieving while still living in her sugar daddy’s apartment to pay for art school.

Levinson said he has always resisted utopian storytelling and wanted the finale to reflect the realities of addiction, grief, and emotional collapse rather than provide a hopeful fantasy.
