Who Is the Obsession Actress? 5 Things to Know About Inde Navarrette

Inde Navarrette is drawing major attention following the success of Obsession, Curry Barker’s horror film about a shy young man named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, whose wish for his childhood friend Nikki, played by Navarrette, to love him “more than anything” spirals into something far darker. Instead of a romantic payoff, the film turns Nikki into an obsessive, possessive and violent presence, fueling audience debate about who is truly the victim and who is the aggressor by the end.

Navarrette’s performance has been widely praised for its range and intensity. The low-budget production also challenged the cast and crew to get creative with stunts, physical acting, vocals and facial expression work, helping Navarrette stand out as one of the film’s breakout stars. As her profile rises, she is increasingly being recognized not only as a scream queen, but also as one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Navarrette later moved to Los Angeles, California, to continue building her acting career. Her childhood involved frequent moves because her father was in the military, and by the time she reached her teenage years, she had attended several different schools. That constant relocation shaped much of her early life before she entered the entertainment industry.

Before Obsession, Navarrette appeared in the fourth season of Netflix’s hit teen drama 13 Reasons Why, where she played Estela de la Cruz. That role helped introduce her to a wider audience and added to her growing list of screen credits as she pursued larger opportunities in film and television.

In Obsession, Navarrette took on especially demanding physical work. One of the film’s most intense scenes involves Nikki in the driver’s seat, violently forcing her head through a car window and repeatedly striking Sarah, played by Megan Lawless, against the steering wheel while Bear watches in horror from the passenger seat. Navarrette performed the sequence herself without a stunt double, wearing a helmet under a wig to make the action possible. The scene was completed in a single take, underscoring both the difficulty of the moment and her commitment to the role.

Navarrette has explained that Nikki’s movements were developed from scratch with director Curry Barker. Because the film was shot in just 26 days on a tight indie budget, the production relied heavily on collaboration and improvisation. Navarrette said the process created a more organic style of movement, even though she described herself as “not a movement person.” She and Barker worked by mirroring each other physically until they found the right rhythm for the character.

The actor also revealed that all of Nikki’s facial expressions and vocal work in the film were done by her, with no AI or CGI involved. She said the production used practical techniques throughout, though some audio was adjusted in post-production to fit the sound design. Navarrette described the experience as both terrifying and fun, especially during a long monologue that she approached with a fearless, all-in performance.
