Carley Fortune Defends Major Change in Amazon’s Every Year After Adaptation

Author Carley Fortune is open to a major change made in the screen adaptation of her novel Every Summer After, now titled Every Year After on Prime Video. In the book, Sam learns about Percy and his brother Charlie’s past relationship before Percy returns to Barry’s Bay. In the series, that reveal is shifted so Percy comes back after Sam’s mother dies, and Sam discovers the truth in the present moment. Fortune said she understood showrunner Amy B. Harris’s reasoning and did not push back on the change because it creates stronger on-screen drama. She explained that, while writing the novel, she recognized the emotional weight of Sam knowing the secret for a long time, but the series benefits from showing his reaction directly. According to Fortune, the adaptation lets viewers watch Sam process the news alongside his grief, which adds tension and emotional depth. She noted that audiences want to see characters confronted with difficult revelations on television, and that the altered timeline will also leave room for more of Sam’s struggle in a potential second season. Every Year After is currently streaming on Prime Video.
