Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill Reunite for New River Song Audio Series

Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill will reunite as River Song and Rory Williams in The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory, a new full-cast audio drama box set scheduled for release in January 2027. The story continues the adventures of River Song, with River visiting Rory at a difficult time in his life. Set between Doctor Who episodes The Wedding of River Song and Asylum of the Daleks, the four-part release finds Rory living in Birmingham after separating from River’s mother, while River arrives with trouble close behind her.

The new audio drama marks the first time Kingston and Darvill have appeared together as River and Rory since the 2012 Doctor Who episode The Angels Take Manhattan. In the box set, the pair are drawn into a series of dangerous adventures that mix family drama with time travel, monsters and pursuit across different locations. The release also explores the father-daughter bond between River and Rory, adding new depth to their relationship from the era of the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory and River.

The four stories in the box set are Bog Man by Lizzie Hopley, Life Lessons by Karissa Hamilton-Bannis, A Most Dangerous Game by Robert Valentine, and The Tashpa Stone by Shai Hussain and John Dorney. Additional cast and plot details will be announced later. The project is being released by Big Finish and is already available to pre-order.

Producer David Richardson said the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory and River remain one of the strongest teams in Doctor Who history, and described the project as a long-awaited return to that era. He added that development on the stories began in 2020 and that recording took place over four days in May. Producer Scott Handcock also praised the reunion, saying it was special to revisit the characters and expand River and Rory’s dynamic in a new audio format.

The box set offers fans a new chance to hear one of Doctor Who’s most popular character pairings, blending emotional family moments with the fast-moving, high-stakes storytelling associated with River Song. With River back in Rory’s life, the adventures promise chaos, danger and time-travel action as their relationship is tested across the episodes.
