French Open 2026: Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli Set Friendship Aside for Grand Slam Glory

Professional athletes often form close friendships even while competing for the sport’s biggest titles, and the latest example comes from tennis at Roland Garros. French Open finalists Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli have developed a strong bond off the court, but both say their personal relationship will not affect their competitive focus when they meet in Sunday’s championship match.

The final will be a third clay-court meeting between the pair this season. Cobolli beat Zverev in Munich, before Zverev responded with victory in Madrid. Their friendship began when they were teammates at the 2024 Laver Cup, where Europe faces a World team, and the relationship has grown since then. Zverev has described the connection as “natural,” while Cobolli has spoken about how the two often chat about films and how their fathers, who also coach them, get along well.

Zverev, the second seed from Germany, enters the final as the favorite to capture the first Grand Slam title of his career. The 29-year-old has reached three previous major finals but has yet to win one, including a loss in the French Open final two years ago. Even so, he said competing for a Grand Slam title makes it easier to set friendship aside, because the occasion is so important. He said players still try to beat each other and win, and that is part of the sport.

Cobolli, seeded 10th, is chasing his first Grand Slam title as well. The Italian reached the final after receiving a walkover in the semifinals when compatriot Matteo Arnaldi withdrew because of a virus. As a result, Cobolli has not played a competitive match since Wednesday, but he said he expects to be ready for the final and believes the rest may even help him physically. He admitted it will only be clear after the match whether the break was an advantage.

Zverev praised Cobolli as both a strong opponent and a good person, and said he also has a positive relationship with Cobolli’s father. Cobolli’s run to the final has added another layer to a rivalry built on mutual respect, familiarity, and regular contact outside competition.

The matchup highlights a broader trend in modern tennis, where players across the tour often socialize, train together, and build close bonds despite the intensity of elite competition. Yet when they step onto the court for a Grand Slam final, friendship is expected to take a back seat to ambition. For Zverev and Cobolli, Sunday’s match will decide who can turn that balance into a career-defining victory.
