Tottenham sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his departure from Liverpool. The 32-year-old left-back will officially join Spurs on 1 July, following the expiry of his contract at Anfield this summer.
Robertson had already confirmed he would leave Liverpool when his deal ended, and Tottenham had long shown interest in him. The club first targeted him during the January transfer window, and a move was nearly completed after the two sides reached an agreement. However, Liverpool later withdrew from the arrangement because they were unable to bring Kostas Tsimikas back from his loan spell at Roma, leaving Robertson to see out the remainder of the season with the Reds.
The Scotland international arrives at Tottenham with a decorated record and extensive Premier League experience. Since joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Robertson made 378 appearances for the club and helped them win two Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also lifted the League Cup twice and won the FA Cup during a highly successful spell under Jürgen Klopp.
Robertson’s arrival is being viewed as a major boost for Tottenham, who are looking to strengthen their squad with proven leadership and top-level experience. New manager Roberto de Zerbi praised the defender as a player he has admired for years, highlighting his technical ability, mentality and leadership qualities. De Zerbi said Robertson’s winning experience and consistent performance at the highest level would make him an important figure both on and off the pitch.
Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the move, describing Robertson as a player whose quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career filled with major honours. Lange added that the defender’s professionalism and commitment would be valuable in guiding the club’s younger players and helping drive the squad forward.
At international level, Robertson remains a key figure for Scotland. He has earned 92 caps and is expected to lead his country at the summer World Cup, further underlining his importance and standing in the game.
The transfer comes as Tottenham continue to reshape their squad after securing Premier League survival on the final day of the season with a win over Everton. With Robertson set to arrive on a free transfer, Spurs are adding an experienced, trophy-winning defender who brings both immediate quality and long-term leadership to the club.
