Colombian Football Final: Nacional’s Most Valuable Player Is Worth Twice as Much as Junior’s Top-Rated Star
Atlético Nacional and Junior de Barranquilla will begin the battle for the first title of Colombian football in 2026. Beyond the sporting aspect, the final pits two of the most valuable squads in the country against each other. According to Transfermarkt figures cited in the report, the combined market value of both teams exceeds 39 million euros, reflecting the financial strength of the two finalists.
Atlético Nacional enters the final as the most valuable team in the tournament. The squad coached by Diego Arias is estimated at 22.53 million euros, while Junior’s roster is valued at 16.70 million euros. That leaves a difference of 5.83 million euros between the two clubs. The gap also appears in their standout players. Nacional striker Cristian Arango is the most valuable player in the series, with a market value of 4 million euros. Junior’s highest-rated player is Joel Canchimbo, valued at 2 million euros. In economic terms, Nacional’s main figure is worth twice as much as Junior’s top-rated player.
The final brings together the two teams that finished at the top of the regular season in the Liga BetPlay. Nacional led the overall standings, while Junior finished second. Both clubs confirmed that form in the knockout rounds and now face a 180-minute series to decide the champion.
The numbers support Atlético Nacional’s strong semester. In addition to topping the general table, the Medellín-based club has the most valuable roster in Colombia. Behind Arango are players such as Juan Manuel Rengifo, Alfredo Morelos and Jorman Campuzano, among others who have helped raise the squad’s overall valuation. Transfermarkt currently places Nacional first among the most valuable teams in the country, with a clear lead over Junior.
Junior, meanwhile, also ranks among the most highly valued clubs in the domestic market. Its 16.70 million-euro squad places it among the teams with the greatest financial capacity to build competitive rosters, behind only Nacional and América de Cali in the report cited.
Still, financial value does not guarantee sporting success. The reigning champion, led by Uruguayan coach Alfredo Arias, reached the final after eliminating Independiente Santa Fe in the semifinals and will try to defend the title it won in the second half of 2025.
The first leg will be played on Tuesday, June 2, at Romelio Martínez Stadium in Barranquilla, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. according to the official schedule confirmed by Dimayor and local authorities. Junior will go into the match without reported suspensions or major injury absences. Nacional, however, will have several setbacks. David Ospina has joined the Colombia national team for the World Cup 2026, while Milton Casco and Dairon Asprilla remain in recovery. Cristian Arango is the main positive news for the Antioquia side after serving a suspension and returning for the opening match of the series.
Ticket prices for the Barranquilla final were set between 80,000 and 250,000 pesos, depending on stadium location, and local authorities expect around 10,000 spectators at Romelio Martínez. The return leg will be played on Monday, June 8, at Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, where the first-half champion of Colombian football will be crowned. Nacional is chasing its 19th league title, while Junior is aiming for its 12th and hoping to retain the crown it won last year.
