Courtney Clenney’s Defense Examined as Knives Come Under Scrutiny

Courtney Clenney, the OnlyFans creator charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, Christian “Toby” Obumseli, is moving closer to trial as both sides continue preparing key evidence and witness testimony. Clenney was arrested in August 2022 and has pleaded not guilty, while her defense maintains that she acted in self-defense during the fatal incident at the couple’s Miami apartment on April 3, 2022. A medical examiner said Obumseli, 27, died after suffering a chest stab wound about three inches deep.

At a pretrial hearing on Monday, June 1, Clenney’s attorneys told the court they were able to examine the knives connected to the case, a development they described as important to their defense. They also said more than eight depositions are scheduled in the coming days as they respond to pretrial motions filed by prosecutors. Defense attorneys had previously complained that some subpoenaed witnesses did not show up for depositions, but they said the case is now back on track as they prepare for trial.

Prosecutors said during the same hearing that their expert is scheduled to evaluate Clenney on June 9. They told the judge they do not expect that process to delay the trial, which is still expected to begin sometime this summer, although no exact start date has been announced. The case had originally been set for late April before both sides filed a joint motion to continue the trial.

The delay came after prosecutors said they had scheduled 15 to 16 depositions, but many witnesses failed to appear. They had hoped to use some of those witnesses as “Williams rule” evidence to show a pattern of alleged prior wrongdoing by Clenney. When granting the postponement, Judge Andrea Wolfson warned that the case would not be delayed indefinitely and indicated that future scheduling problems would not be tolerated.

Clenney, who built a large social media following before her arrest, was in Hawaii at the time authorities took her into custody. Her attorney has said she was there for rehabilitation related to substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. She has remained jailed without bond since being extradited to Florida.

The case has drawn significant attention because of Clenney’s online profile and the serious nature of the charges. As the summer trial date approaches, both the prosecution and defense are now focused on completing depositions, expert evaluations and pretrial motions that could shape how the murder case is presented to a jury.
