Gotham TV Awards Winners: I Love LA, Pluribus Take Top Honors

The Gotham Television Awards were presented Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan, offering an early look at the TV awards season ahead of the Emmy ceremony in September. Netflix entered the night with the most nominations, 22 in all, but HBO Max emerged as the biggest winner, collecting five trophies. Netflix finished with three wins, while Hulu was the only other platform to win more than once.

HBO Max’s “DTF St. Louis” was the only show to win more than one award. The suburban mystery took both Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited or Anthology Series for David Harbour. HBO Max also scored a breakthrough comedy victory with “I Love LA,” created by Rachel Sennott, while Apple TV’s “Pluribus,” from Vince Gilligan, won Breakthrough Drama Series.

Among the major acting winners, Tim Robinson won Outstanding Lead Performance in a Comedy Series for HBO Max’s “The Chair Company,” and Laurie Metcalf took the supporting comedy prize for Netflix’s “Big Mistakes.” Chase Infiniti earned Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series for Hulu’s “The Testaments,” while Babou Ceesay won Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series for FX/Hulu’s “Alien: Earth.” In limited series categories, Michael Shannon won Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited or Anthology Series for his role as President James A. Garfield in Netflix’s “Death by Lightning.”

The nonfiction category went to Netflix’s “Katrina: Come Hell and High Water,” which won Breakthrough Nonfiction Series. In original film, Shudder’s “Reflection in a Dead Diamond” won Outstanding Original Film, Broadcast or Streaming, while Cory Michael Smith won Outstanding Performance in an Original Film for HBO Max’s “Mountainhead.”

Other nominees included “Big Mistakes,” “The Chair Company,” “Long Story Short,” “Too Much,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Alien: Earth,” “Dept. Q,” “Task,” “Beef,” “Half Man,” and “Lord of the Flies,” reflecting the breadth of competition across comedy, drama, limited series, nonfiction, and original film.

The Gotham Television Awards are considered a significant industry marker as studios and streamers position their strongest titles for the coming Emmy race.
