Patriots and Eagles Reportedly Have Framework in Place for A.J. Brown Trade

A.J. Brown is reportedly on the verge of joining the New England Patriots, with NFL insider Albert Breer saying there is a “very high likelihood” a trade is completed early next week. Breer said the framework for a deal is already in place, and that it would likely only fall apart if either the Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles backed out. The timing of the potential move is significant because June 1 has been viewed as an important date tied to the Eagles’ salary-cap situation, which could affect trade flexibility.

The report comes amid mixed signals from other league insiders. Earlier, Josina Anderson said the Patriots and Eagles had been debating the details of the compensation package. Ian Rapoport also noted that the two sides were not especially close at one point, suggesting the process could still take time. Breer, however, said he remains optimistic despite the possibility that something could change over the next few days.

One major issue appears to be the draft pick compensation. Breer said Philadelphia has wanted a first-round pick involved in the trade from the start, and he indicated that a future first-rounder would likely be the centerpiece of the package. He suggested that a 2028 first-round pick could be the key to getting the deal done.

If finalized, the trade would give the Patriots a true No. 1 receiver, something the team has lacked in recent seasons. Brown has been one of the NFL’s most productive wideouts, making three Pro Bowls and posting at least 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in all but one of his seven seasons. He first emerged as a star with the Tennessee Titans before becoming one of the league’s top receivers after joining the Eagles in 2022.

For New England, Brown would instantly become the most accomplished player on a receiver group that currently includes Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and Efton Chism III. The move would represent a major upgrade for the Patriots’ passing attack and signal an aggressive effort to add elite talent around their offense.
