Euphoria fans react as Zendaya’s Rue dies in Season 3 finale

Fans of Euphoria are reacting strongly after the Season 3 finale reportedly ended with Rue, played by Zendaya, dying from an accidental overdose. In the episode, Rue takes painkillers that had been laced with fentanyl by drug lord Alamo Brown, leading to a shocking and tragic conclusion that left many viewers emotional and upset. Social media quickly filled with reactions from fans who said the ending “shattered” them and described the scene as heartbreaking, devastating, and difficult to watch.
Many viewers said they were especially disturbed because Rue had been sober and appeared to have a chance at a better life. Some argued that killing her off undercut the hope they believed the series should offer to people struggling with addiction. Others said the death felt quiet and realistic rather than dramatic or “epic,” which made it even sadder. Several fans pointed to the moment when Colman Domingo’s character discovers Rue dead, saying that sequence was among the most painful parts of the finale. Zendaya’s performance in the final scene also drew emotional responses, with fans saying they could not stop crying after watching Rue’s fate unfold.
Series creator Sam Levinson defended the ending in a post-finale interview with HBO, saying Rue’s death was the most honest conclusion for the story. He said he wanted to show the reality of relapse and addiction without softening the consequences. Levinson also said the decision was meant in part to honor late cast member Angus Cloud, who died in July 2023 at age 25 from an accidental overdose. In the finale, Cloud’s character Fezco appears in Rue’s dream during the overdose sequence, and the scene includes unused footage of Cloud and Zendaya.
Zendaya also addressed the end of the series in a behind-the-scenes segment after the episode. She thanked fans for supporting the show and said it had been an honor to be part of it. The actress told viewers she was grateful for those who had followed the series from the beginning and watched her grow up through the role of Rue.
Levinson later confirmed that Season 3 is the final season of Euphoria. He told the New York Times that the series had reached the end of the story it set out to tell, describing it as a narrative about addiction and its consequences. The finale also continued a season that had already faced backlash for earlier dramatic story choices, including the death of Nate Jacobs and a controversial OnlyFans storyline involving Cassie Howard.
The ending has now become one of the most debated moments in the series, with fans split between those who praised the emotional honesty of the scene and those who felt Rue deserved a different fate.
