Emily Blunt Recalls the One Time Tom Cruise Nearly Cracked During Edge of Tomorrow, and Those 80-Pound Suits Were to Blame

Emily Blunt has shared a memorable behind-the-scenes story from the set of Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 sci-fi action film in which she starred opposite Tom Cruise. The actress recently recalled the experience while appearing on Hot Ones, where she was asked about the most “Tom Cruise” moment she witnessed during production. Her answer highlighted both Cruise’s intense work ethic and the physical difficulty of filming in the movie’s heavy armored suits.

Blunt explained that one scene took place inside a drop ship while the cast wore massive ExoSuits. She said Cruise’s enthusiasm was so strong that it made everyone around him feel motivated not to complain, even though the conditions were extremely uncomfortable. According to Blunt, the suit she wore weighed about 80 pounds, and she was also suspended in a harness, which put a great deal of pressure on her body. She described the setup as hot, exhausting, and painful, adding that she was worried about the strain it might be putting on her health.

At the time of filming, Blunt was 31 and had not yet welcomed the two daughters she now shares with husband John Krasinski. The actress said the discomfort eventually led her to blurt out that the situation “sucks,” while Cruise responded by framing it as a challenge. The exchange captured what Blunt described as a very Tom Cruise reaction: focused, determined, and unwilling to dwell on the hardship.

Cruise has long been known for his commitment to filmmaking and his willingness to push through difficult production conditions. Blunt’s story reinforces that reputation while also offering a more humorous and human side of their collaboration. Despite the physical strain, her recollection suggests that the two stars shared a strong on-set dynamic and a memorable working relationship.

Edge of Tomorrow, also known as Live Die Repeat, was based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill. The film follows a military officer who becomes trapped in a time loop while fighting an alien invasion on Earth. As the character repeatedly relives the same events, he learns how to use the loop to improve his chances of defeating the enemy. The film became a fan favorite for its inventive concept, action sequences, and performances from both Cruise and Blunt.

Interest in a sequel has continued for years, though nothing has been confirmed. Cruise has previously discussed ideas for a follow-up, but the project has not moved forward. Meanwhile, Blunt is preparing for another major sci-fi role, starring in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming alien film Disclosure Day, which is scheduled to open in theaters on June 12.
