French Open Day 5 Live: Francisco Comesaña Caps a Historic Day for Argentine Tennis with a Victory

Argentina had a memorable day at Roland Garros on Thursday, with several players producing major results in the second round. The biggest headline came from Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, who delivered one of the tournament’s most surprising wins by defeating world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in five sets after coming back from two sets down. Cerúndolo was also trailing 5-1 in the deciding set before Sinner appeared physically affected by the extreme heat in Paris. The Italian later said the high temperatures played a role, though he did not present them as the only reason for his collapse. Cerúndolo turned the match around by winning six straight games and closed it out with consecutive 6-1 sets.
The Cerúndolo family celebration did not end there. Francisco Cerúndolo also advanced to the third round after beating French player Hugo Gaston. He dropped the first set 2-6, but then took control of the match with a strong run of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1. His victory moved him one step closer to matching his best ever Roland Garros performances, when he reached the round of 16 in 2023 and 2024.
Not every Argentine got the same result. Facundo Díaz Acosta, who had entered the match with momentum after a strong opening-round win, was eliminated in a long five-set battle against Learner Tien. The American, currently ranked No. 20 and fresh off a title in Geneva, won 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 after a hard-fought contest.
Later in the day, Román Burruchaga also bowed out after a promising start against Félix Auger-Aliassime. Burruchaga took the opening set 6-4, but the Canadian fourth seed and world No. 6 responded with a dominant stretch to win 0-6, 7-5 and 6-1, ending the Argentine’s run.
The final notable Argentine success came from Francisco Comesaña, who prevailed in a five-set battle against Luciano Darderi. The Mar del Plata native defeated the player born in Villa Gesell, who now represents Italy, by 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a match that went the distance.
The day added to an already strong Argentine presence in Paris. Thiago Tirante had previously secured a place in the third round, and Solana Sierra also advanced in the women’s draw. For Argentina, Roland Garros produced a mix of breakthrough victories, hard-fought defeats and a historic upset that stood out as one of the most remarkable moments of the tournament so far.
