Maddox Jolie-Pitt Seeks to Legally Drop Brad Pitt’s Surname

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s son Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt has filed to legally remove “Pitt” from his surname, according to documents seen by Us Weekly. If approved, the 24-year-old would be legally known as Maddox Chivan Jolie. The filing comes as Pitt, 62, recently scored a legal win in his ongoing dispute with Jolie over their Château Miraval winery, leading a source to suggest the timing was notable.

Maddox had already begun using “Jolie” professionally earlier this year. In February, his name appeared as “Maddox Jolie” in the credits of the film Couture, where he worked as assistant director. His name change follows a broader pattern among Jolie and Pitt’s children, several of whom have increasingly dropped the Pitt surname since their parents’ separation.

Angelina Jolie, 50, and Brad Pitt were married from 2014 to 2016 and share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox. After the split, their family has remained in the public eye because of both personal and legal disputes. Zahara has publicly used “Zahara Marley Jolie” in recent years, while Vivienne was listed as “Vivienne Jolie” in a Playbill for The Outsiders. Shiloh also legally removed Pitt from her surname after turning 18, a request that was granted in 2024.

Sources previously told Us Weekly that Pitt was deeply affected by Shiloh’s decision, viewing it as a sign of a wider estrangement from his children. One insider said the actor was devastated by the choice, while another described the name change as symbolically significant amid years of tension following the divorce. Pitt has also spoken publicly about his shortcomings as a father, saying in a 2017 GQ interview that the divorce forced him to confront the need to be better for his children and to be more emotionally present.

The latest development underscores the continuing distance between Pitt and some of his children, even as legal disputes between the former couple continue. While the request to change Maddox’s name is a separate matter from the Miraval case, it arrives at a moment when the family’s private conflicts remain under intense scrutiny.
