Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Cast: Who’s Returning and Who Isn’t

Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias is heading into season 5 with major changes, including new faces in Serenity and at least one familiar character missing. The series, which follows lifelong friends Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen as they juggle romance, work and family, ended season 4 on a dramatic note with breakups, engagements, surprise decisions and a major death, leaving viewers eager to see what happens next.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who has played Maddie since the show launched in 2020, said the new season is taking longer to complete because the production is filming in multiple locations. She also noted that season 5 introduces several new cast members, bringing “fresh blood and energy” to Serenity. Swisher said Maddie’s storyline will continue to evolve as the character adjusts to her new job in New York City, a move that divided some fans but opens the door for a bigger personal and professional arc.
Brooke Elliott is also back as Dana Sue, and filming has shown her visiting Maddie in New York. Heather Headley’s Helen will remain central to the story as season 5 explores her relationship with Eric and possible conversations about expanding their family after their engagement in season 4. Justin Bruening is expected to continue as Cal, with the story also hinting at whether he and Maddie may consider having another child or deepening their family life.
Other returning characters include Logan Allen’s Kyle, Anneliese Judge’s Annie, Jamie Lynn Spears’ Noreen, Dion Johnstone’s Erik, Brandon Quinn’s Ronnie, and Chris Medlin’s Isaac. Judge previously said she was eager to see how Annie and Ty’s relationship would unfold after season 4 ended with tension between them. However, Carson Rowland, who plays Ty, will not return for season 5, despite earlier expectations that his role would expand. His absence marks one of the most notable cast changes for the new season.
Chris Klein’s Bill will also not be returning after the character was killed off in season 4. The death was described by the show’s creator as a major turning point designed to affect the entire town and its residents. Meanwhile, Jamie-Lynn Sigler joins the cast as Nell Winters, a writer Maddie befriends in New York, while several new Serenity residents will add conflict and new storylines. Janice Wesley plays Miss Eustice, Courtney Grace is business partner Courtney Sinclair, and John Gabriel Rodriquez appears as rival businessman Clark Bellson. Aidan Merwarth, Austin Woods and Iman Benson also join the ensemble in roles tied to the growing drama in Serenity and beyond.
With returning favorites, fresh characters and unresolved season 4 cliffhangers, Sweet Magnolias season 5 is shaping up to be one of the show’s biggest chapters yet.
