Artists Drop Out of Freedom 250: Bret Michaels and Martina McBride – Hollywood Life

Several artists have withdrawn from the Freedom 250 celebration at the Great American State Fair after saying the event was not presented to them as nonpartisan. The festival, scheduled for June 25, 2026, is being organized as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary festivities ahead of July 4, but controversy over its political ties has quickly overshadowed the lineup.

Country star Martina McBride announced on May 29, 2026, that she will no longer perform. In her statement, she said she was led to believe the show was a nonpartisan event celebrating all 50 states and bringing people together through music. McBride said that once the event’s direction began to change, she felt the terms she had been given were misleading. She added that she has spent her career singing about real people and real issues, and that she hopes fans understand her decision was not meant as an abandonment of those values.

Rock singer Bret Michaels also exited the event. In a statement, he said the opportunity was originally described to his team as a patriotic celebration honoring the country, veterans, active military members, first responders, teachers, and hardworking Americans. Michaels said the event has since become more divisive than he agreed to be part of. He also cited safety concerns for his fans, band, crew, family, and himself, saying that threats connected to the controversy were unacceptable and helped push him to step away.

Rapper Young MC likewise said he had informed his agents that he would not perform at the Freedom 250 event. In a social media post, he said the artists were never told about any political involvement. He also objected to reports describing the event as “Trump-backed,” saying he hoped to perform in Washington, D.C., in the future at a show that is not politically charged.

C+C Music Factory vocalist Freedom Williams also backed out, saying in a video that he asked his agent to remove him from the lineup after learning more about the event’s political association. Williams said he had not been told about any Trump connection when the performance was first discussed. He described the backlash as intense and said he did not want to be part of something he viewed as politically divisive.

The withdrawals mark a major setback for the Freedom 250 celebration, which had been promoted as a patriotic music event tied to America’s semiquincentennial. Instead, the controversy has raised questions about how the show was presented to performers and whether the event can maintain the broad, nonpartisan image it originally promised. With multiple high-profile acts walking away, the lineup has been significantly weakened just weeks before the scheduled date.
