NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said spaceflight is difficult and that developing heavy-lift launch capability is especially challenging. He said NASA would work with partners to support a thorough investigation, assess any near-term mission impacts, and resume launches as soon as possible.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it was aware of the incident but noted the test was not within the scope of FAA-licensed activities. The agency added that there was no impact to air traffic. The explosion adds another challenge for Blue Origin, which has been trying to expand the reliability and operational use of its New Glenn rocket.
The company’s rocket program had already faced scrutiny after the FAA ordered an investigation into a separate mishap last month involving a failed satellite launch attempt. In that case, Blue Origin tried to place an AST SpaceMobile satellite into orbit using its New Glenn rocket, but the mission did not achieve the intended orbital results.
Despite those setbacks, Blue Origin has recorded an important milestone in the New Glenn program. The company successfully launched a New Glenn rocket from Florida in November and landed its reusable booster for the first time, marking a significant step in its effort to build a competitive heavy-lift launch system.
The latest explosion is likely to delay timelines and deepen attention on Blue Origin’s testing and safety procedures as it works to determine what went wrong. For now, the company says its priority is to analyze the anomaly, support the investigation, and resume flight operations after addressing any issues uncovered by the test.
