Milan, Maldini fires back at Cardinale: “One-man show? That answers itself”

Paolo Maldini addressed recent comments about his relationship with AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale with a brief and pointed response, choosing not to directly engage with the reported criticism. When asked at Sky’s headquarters during the “Sky Inclusion Days” event, where he greeted fans, signed autographs, and took photos, the former Milan captain replied with irony: “It answers itself.” The remark came after media reports suggested Cardinale views Maldini as a “one man show” who is unable to work as part of a team.

Maldini’s reaction was measured and avoided escalation, but it also reflected clear distance from the speculation surrounding his departure from Milan and the club’s internal dynamics. The former sporting director did not expand on the rumors, instead letting his short comment stand as his answer to the allegations. His appearance at Sky was informal and fan-oriented, but the questions inevitably turned to his future and his past at the club, where he remains one of the most respected figures in Milan’s modern history.

He was also asked about a possible role with the Italian national team, but he declined to give a firm answer. Instead, he kept his options open regarding a potential move abroad, particularly to Fenerbahçe. Maldini recently met in Istanbul with Hakan Safi, one of the candidates for the Turkish club’s presidency, and a photo of the two together was later posted on Instagram, fueling speculation about his interest in the project.

Asked about that meeting, Maldini confirmed the connection but stopped short of making any commitment. “He is a friend, one of the candidates for the presidency, we will see what happens if he wins,” he said, suggesting that his future could depend on the outcome of the election. The statement did not confirm any negotiations, but it did leave open the possibility of involvement with the Turkish side if the leadership change goes through.

For now, Maldini remains noncommittal about his next professional step. His comments offered little detail, but they made clear that he is aware of the speculation and is not rushing to address it publicly. At the same time, his words about Fenerbahçe indicate that he is keeping his doors open as possible opportunities develop.

The episode underscores the continued attention surrounding Maldini, whose name still carries significant weight in Italian and European football. Whether discussing his past at Milan, the possibility of a future with the national team, or a potential move to Fenerbahçe, every comment he makes draws interest. On this occasion, he chose restraint, answering criticism with a brief joke and leaving the rest to interpretation.
