Zubeldía discusses Canobbio’s future at Fluminense amid River Plate interest: “I hope it’s what’s best for him”

Canobbio, who scored a fine goal in Fluminense’s 3-1 win over Deportivo La Guaira of Venezuela last Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores, has recently attracted interest from River Plate of Argentina. The Argentine club made an initial inquiry about the Uruguayan forward, but there is still no active negotiation between the sides.

Fluminense coach Luis Zubeldía addressed Canobbio’s future when asked whether the club could lose the player after the tournament. Zubeldía said he could not predict what will happen next, but emphasized the striker’s commitment to the team. He noted that Canobbio had the option of joining the Uruguay national team without playing in the match, yet chose to take part because he understood how important the game was for Fluminense.

According to Zubeldía, Canobbio made clear that his priority was to help the club in a key continental fixture before turning his attention to international duty. The coach highlighted that decision as an example of the player’s dedication, adding that Canobbio likely would not publicly say it himself, but that he personally knew the forward had chosen to play because of the importance of the match. Zubeldía said he hopes the best outcome for both Canobbio and Fluminense regarding his future.

Canobbio is scheduled to join Uruguay on Thursday. Other players who compete in Brazilian football, including Arrascaeta, Varela, De La Cruz and Piquerez, are already at the national team’s training center. The Uruguayan Football Association has until next Saturday, May 30, to submit the final squad list selected by coach Marcelo Bielsa.
