Orioles vs. Rays Game Thread: Wednesday Night Matchup Starts at 6:35 PM ET

The Baltimore Orioles are facing a defining moment in their 2026 season as they try to complete a sweep of the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays. After a dramatic walk-off win in extra innings on Monday and a convincing 6-1 victory on Tuesday, the Orioles now have a chance to earn what would be their most impressive statement win of the year. The game will be televised on MASN, MASN+, and FS1 nationally.
Although Baltimore would still remain below .500 even with a sweep, taking three straight from Tampa Bay would stand as a major sign of progress for a team that has spent much of the season battling frustration and inconsistency. Entering the series, the Orioles had already endured disappointing losses to Washington and Tampa Bay, and they had struggled to separate themselves from the kind of underwhelming play that has defined much of their 2026 campaign. A series win against the Tigers offered some relief, but Baltimore still came into this matchup seven games under .500 and outside the pace they hoped to set at the start of the season.
A sweep would mark the Orioles’ first against a strong opponent this year and only their second series win over a team above .500. It would also give Baltimore its third three-game winning streak of the season, making it one of the clearest indicators yet that the club may be better than last year’s disappointing version.
Rookie right-hander Trey Gibson will take the mound for Baltimore. Like several young pitchers before him, Gibson has been pushed into a rotation role more because of need than because he was fully established at the major league level. In his first career start at Yankee Stadium, he lasted 4.2 innings and allowed four hits, three earned runs, two walks, and two home runs while striking out two. He also made a relief appearance against the Athletics, working the final two innings of a 4-3 loss and giving up one run.
Gibson’s sinker and slider have shown promise, but he may need a broader arsenal against a dangerous Tampa Bay lineup. The Rays’ Junior Caminero, Jonathan Aranda, and Yandy Díaz have all hit sinkers well, while Aranda and Díaz have also produced strong results against sliders.
Tampa Bay will counter with veteran left-hander Steven Matz, who has been effective in his first season with the Rays. The nearly 35-year-old has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his eight starts this year. Baltimore has had trouble against left-handed pitchers overall in 2026, ranking 25th in batting average and 24th in slugging percentage against southpaws.
Matz limited the Orioles to one run in four innings in a start one week ago, and he owns a 3.76 ERA with a .248 batting average against Baltimore overall. His numbers at Camden Yards are less impressive, though, with a 5.02 ERA and a .271 opponent average in five appearances there. Orioles hitters Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward have both handled Matz well in limited action, giving Baltimore some hope as it looks to finish off a statement series win.
