Henry Cavill’s Voltron Movie Heads Straight to Streaming Release

The live-action Voltron movie is still moving forward, but it will no longer be released in theaters. The Henry Cavill-led adaptation is now set to debut directly on Prime Video in 2027, according to the report. The film is based on the classic Voltron: Defender of the Universe animated series, which itself originated from Japan’s Beast King GoLion and became a major pop-culture hit in the United States during the 1980s.

In this new version, Henry Cavill is reportedly playing King Alfor of the planet Arus, rather than one of the five lion pilots. His role is said to be more limited and possibly ghostlike in nature, similar to a mentor figure guiding the heroes from beyond. The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for Red Notice and Skyscraper, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman.

The original Japanese series, Beast King GoLion, premiered in 1981 and was adapted for North American audiences as Voltron: Defender of the Universe in 1984. The story centers on five pilots who each control a robotic lion, with the lions combining to form the powerful giant robot Voltron. The show became an immediate success and generated a large wave of toys, merchandise, and long-lasting fan loyalty. Along with Robotech, it played a significant role in building American interest in anime and helped shape the anime-influenced pop culture that followed.

Amazon MGM Studios is producing the new film. The studio is also behind Masters of the Universe, and the report suggests the performance of that project could influence how the company thinks about future theatrical releases for nostalgic properties like Voltron. For now, though, the movie appears committed to streaming.

The director previously said the film would stay true to the “heart and spirit” of Voltron while introducing a new generation of pilots. However, the latest report indicates that familiar characters such as Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, and Princess Allura may not appear in the same form fans remember, if at all. Instead, the story seems to be leaning into a new take on the franchise’s mythology.

The villain King Zarkon is still part of the film, and he will be played by Sterling K. Brown, a casting choice that has drawn attention and added some intrigue to the project. While the movie’s move away from theaters may disappoint some longtime fans, the combination of Cavill, Brown, and Thurber keeps the project in the spotlight.

The film remains in development for a 2027 release on Prime Video.
