Melissa Gilbert of Little House on the Prairie Makes Major Family Announcement Amid Return to Spotlight

Melissa Gilbert is gradually returning to social media after a period of relative quiet following the arrest of her husband, Timothy Busfield. The 62-year-old actress has continued to support him while keeping most of her recent online activity personal, light, and centered on memories and connections to Little House on the Prairie.

In her latest Instagram update, Gilbert revealed a surprising link between her birth family and the character she played on the classic television series. Born in 1964 to Frances Catherine “Cathy” Wood, an exotic dancer, and David Darlington, a stock car racer and mechanic, Gilbert was placed for adoption shortly after birth and later raised by actor Peter Gilbert and his wife, Barbara Crane. She eventually met her biological father later in life, though her mother had already died by then.

On Tuesday, May 26, Gilbert told her nearly 400,000 Instagram followers that she had learned her birth father’s middle name was “Manly,” the same name Laura Ingalls Wilder used for her husband Almanzo Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. She credited a cousin for helping uncover the family history and also shared another coincidence: her birth mother, Cathy Wood, was born on April 26, 1935, while her adoptive mother, Barbara Gilbert-Cowan, was born on April 26, 1936.

Gilbert said she decided to reopen comments on the post because the discovery felt too meaningful to keep private. She explained that she wanted to share the story in case other birth relatives might see it, and said she knows many people have similar experiences and stories of adoption, identity, and family discovery. She added that if the conversation became negative or disruptive, she would turn comments off again.

The next day, Gilbert posted more research gathered by her cousin, including information from an engagement announcement for her birth mother’s first husband, Leslie R. Mullins. Gilbert suggested he may have been the father of her three older half-siblings, whom she hopes to learn more about. She also noted another striking similarity: her birth mother was a performer who began working as a child, just as Gilbert did. Her mother reportedly had her first professional performance at age 3 1/2, while Gilbert appeared in her first commercial at age 2.

Reflecting on the parallels, Gilbert wrote that she felt fortunate to have been “born with the right set of genes” and adopted into “the exactly perfect family.” She described the discoveries as remarkable and said she believes there may be no coincidences. She also used hashtags including “lucky me” and “there are no coincidences,” while tagging official Little House pages. Fans responded by sharing their own stories and family connections in the comments.
