Flávio Bolsonaro Meets with U.S. Deputy Secretary on May 27, 2026

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) met on Wednesday, May 27, at the U.S. State Department in Washington with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Darren Beattie, an adviser to Donald Trump who has been sent to Brazil. Former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo also attended the meeting.

According to a statement sent by Figueiredo, the meeting took place at the invitation of the U.S. government. He said the discussion covered possible areas of cooperation between Brazil and the United States in the event of a future election victory by the senator, as well as a proposal to have Brazil’s PCC and Comando Vermelho criminal gangs classified by the United States as foreign terrorist organizations.

The State Department visit came one day after Flávio Bolsonaro met former and current U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House. Figueiredo said Trump welcomed Flávio warmly and that Trump’s first question concerned former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Allies of the Liberal Party (PL) have presented the meetings as politically significant for Flávio Bolsonaro’s early presidential campaign, seeking to highlight his direct access to Trump and to figures within the U.S. government.

After the White House meeting, Eduardo Bolsonaro said he had asked U.S. officials to designate PCC and Comando Vermelho as terrorist groups. The issue was again discussed during Wednesday’s meeting at the State Department.

The Bolsonaro family’s U.S. trip has drawn attention from the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. On Tuesday, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin criticized Eduardo Bolsonaro’s activities abroad and said Brazil did not need “another member of the family working against the country” in the United States.
