Jared McCain Sparks Buzz with ‘Contagious Energy’ in Oklahoma City Thunder Run

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jared McCain is continuing to show the same confidence and individuality that made him one of the NBA’s most recognizable young personalities, while also proving he can contribute in a major playoff setting. Known for his painted nails, TikTok dance videos, and large social media following, McCain has embraced criticism throughout his rise, saying he has always been comfortable being himself and crediting his family for that confidence. On the court, that personality has carried into a Thunder run that has put him on the edge of his first NBA Finals appearance.
McCain played an important role in Oklahoma City’s 122-113 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday, scoring 12 points with three 3-pointers, six rebounds and three assists. He also finished the game on the floor and helped steady the Thunder during a key fourth-quarter stretch. It was another sign of how quickly he has become a useful piece for a team that acquired him in a midseason trade from the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 22-year-old’s NBA journey has already included significant highs and setbacks. Selected 16th overall by Philadelphia in the 2024 NBA draft out of Duke, McCain burst out of the gate as an early contender for Rookie of the Year after averaging 15.3 points through his first 23 games. But his rookie season ended on Dec. 14, 2024, when a meniscus tear in his left knee sidelined him. He said the injury was a major shock, but one he tried to handle with patience and faith.
His second season in Philadelphia was more difficult, with his production dropping and playing time shrinking as rookie VJ Edgecombe emerged. Still, McCain said he valued his time with the 76ers, making his February trade to Oklahoma City especially emotional. He recalled crying when he learned of the deal, describing his former teammates as brothers and saying he still misses Philadelphia.
McCain’s transition to the Thunder, however, has been remarkably smooth. His energy, humor and work ethic quickly made him popular in the locker room. Teammates such as Alex Caruso and Luguentz Dort praised his upbeat personality, constant movement on offense and willingness to put in extra work late at night. Off the court, he even became part of the team’s culture with an impromptu TikTok dance for fans at the airport after a road trip, a moment recorded by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
In Game 2, McCain also provided comic relief along with scoring. He hit a long 3-pointer during a fourth-quarter run, assisted Gilgeous-Alexander on a late basket, and joked around with his star teammate during a tense possession. For McCain, the experience has been surreal: after a difficult season and a sudden move, he is now part of a Thunder team three wins from the NBA Finals.
