New Hampshire Residents Brave Wind and Rain to Mark Memorial Day Events

Rainy weather disrupted some Memorial Day weekend events across New Hampshire on Sunday, but many residents still turned out to mark the unofficial start of summer and honor fallen service members. In Penacook, dozens of people braved wind and rain for the Memorial Day parade, which featured community participation and a strong tribute to military members who died in service. Boscawen resident Kylie Dennis said she would not have missed the parade regardless of the weather, noting that the event carried added meaning as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary this summer.

In Meredith, the Memorial Weekend Craft Fair drew visitors despite the cold and wet conditions. More than 75 small businesses took part, offering handmade artwork, specialty foods and other goods. Attendees said they enjoyed browsing the variety of local creations and spending time outdoors with family and friends. One visitor described the appeal of simply walking around and seeing the different kinds of art on display.

For some, the weather made the day less comfortable but did not diminish the purpose of the gatherings. Hillsborough resident Cathy Houle said the temperatures were low enough to require earmuffs and a puffy coat, but she felt it was worthwhile to be with loved ones and to remember the veterans in her life. She said the shared time together mattered more than the poor conditions.

Although some events were canceled because of the rain, Memorial Day observances continued across the state, and more parades were scheduled for Monday. Many participants and organizers expressed hope for clearer weather ahead, including for Fourth of July celebrations later this summer, as the country moves closer to its 250th anniversary year.
