Heatwave: 19-Year-Old Man Drowns in Cergy While Trying to Swim Across the Oise

A 19-year-old man drowned on Tuesday, May 26, in Cergy, in France’s Val-d’Oise department, while swimming with friends near the Oise river and the leisure base area. According to consistent reports, he attempted to swim across the river and got into difficulty midway through the crossing. He called for help before disappearing from sight. Three friends who remained out of the water alerted firefighters after they lost visual contact with him.
The young man’s body was recovered later, reportedly brought to the surface by the propellers of a passing barge. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 p.m., the Val-d’Oise fire and rescue service said.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death. A possible mild alcohol intoxication was mentioned as a factor to be confirmed or ruled out by the autopsy. The public prosecutor’s office in Pontoise has opened a death investigation to determine exactly what happened, including whether the tragedy occurred in an unsupervised area near the leisure base, as suggested by officials speaking on BFMTV.
A psychological emergency support unit was also activated after the incident. According to the fire and rescue service, it provided care to nine people in total: the six people who were with the victim at the time and three members of his family.
The drowning occurred as France continues to face an intense and early summer heatwave. Before the Cergy accident, government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon said on Tuesday morning that the heat episode had already caused seven deaths across the country, including at least five drownings. Her office later clarified that two drownings were reported in Gironde, one in Marne, one in Seine-et-Marne and one in Maine-et-Loire. Two other people died during sporting activities in Paris and in the Lyon metropolitan area.
The heatwave has prompted broader public safety concerns, especially around swimming and outdoor exertion. In response to rising temperatures, Météo-France expanded orange heatwave alerts to 13 departments for Wednesday, adding Deux-Sèvres, Charente, Charente-Maritime and Gironde to areas already under alert on Tuesday.
The Cergy drowning underscores the dangers of swimming in rivers and other uncontrolled waters, particularly during periods of extreme heat when more people seek relief near lakes, rivers and leisure sites. Emergency services and local authorities are urging caution as temperatures remain high and water conditions can quickly become hazardous, even for young and apparently healthy swimmers.
