Paul Wesley has addressed the long-discussed possibility of a Star Trek spin-off centered on Captain Kirk’s first year in command, saying the idea remains something he and others would be eager to do if the opportunity ever came. In an interview with Collider, Wesley, who plays Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, said there is no shortage of enthusiasm for the project, but added that no formal offer has been made yet. His comments come as speculation continues around the future of the franchise and the potential for expanding Kirk’s story beyond his current appearance in the series.
Star Trek currently has two active television productions. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has already completed filming on its second and final season, while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to end with its fifth season, although a premiere date has not yet been announced. Strange New Worlds is one of the franchise’s more classic-style entries, following an episodic format that echoes the original Star Trek series while still updating the universe for modern audiences.
The show is overseen by Alex Kurtzman, who has led the broader expansion of the Star Trek television universe in recent years. Set roughly ten years before the events of the classic series, Strange New Worlds focuses on Captain Christopher Pike, Spock, and Una Chin-Riley aboard the USS Enterprise as they travel to new worlds and take on spacefaring missions. The series has been praised by many fans for blending familiar Trek storytelling with a contemporary cast and production style.
The series stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike, with Christina Chong, Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, and Babs Olusanmokun also among the cast. Wesley’s role as Kirk has drawn attention because the character remains one of the most iconic figures in the Star Trek canon, and any potential spin-off would likely explore a relatively untapped period of his career.
In Brazil, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available on Paramount+, where the first three seasons are already streaming. With Strange New Worlds moving toward its final season and interest in the franchise still strong, Wesley’s remarks are likely to keep fan discussion alive around whether Kirk could eventually get his own standalone series.
