Jon Jones Addresses Current UFC Status: “I’m Still on the Roster”
Jon Jones has not fully closed the door on a return to competition, despite previously calling for his release from the UFC after a public falling out with the promotion. The former UFC heavyweight champion recently responded to praise from Ciryl Gane, who described Jones as the best fighter currently on the UFC roster and the greatest fighter in UFC history. Jones thanked Gane for the compliment and said he remains on the roster and capable of taking part in major fights. Jones also suggested that he is still able to compete at the highest level.
Jones, who holds a 28-1 record, returned to active competition in 2023 after a three-year layoff and quickly defeated Gane to win the vacant UFC heavyweight title. He later defended that belt against Stipe Miocic. After that, Jones avoided a matchup with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall for an extended period. In June 2025, he announced his retirement, ending speculation about an immediate title unification fight.
Since then, Jones has repeatedly hinted at wanting back into the spotlight. When talk began about the UFC potentially holding an event at the White House, Jones was quick to push for a spot on the card. However, those plans did not materialize. UFC president Dana White said there were no negotiations involving Jones for the event, which appeared to deepen the tension between the fighter and the promotion.
Jones then publicly criticized the UFC and began requesting his release from the organization. He has also compared events promoted by other companies favorably to UFC shows, including praising Most Valuable Promotions’ debut event as better than the UFC. His recent comments, however, indicate that his retirement may not be permanent and that he still sees himself as a viable option for some of the sport’s biggest matchups.
Jones remains one of the most decorated and controversial figures in mixed martial arts. His record, championship success, and long-standing reputation continue to keep him at the center of UFC conversation, even amid uncertainty over whether he will fight again. While no official comeback has been announced, Jones’ latest remarks suggest that a return to the Octagon cannot be ruled out.
