A teenager from California has won the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee after three days of competition at Washington’s Constitution Hall, ending the event with a fast-paced final round against 12-year-old Ishaan Gupta.
The winner, Shrey Parikh, faced Gupta in a tense head-to-head spell-off in which both contestants were required to spell as many words as possible within 90 seconds. The final round tested not only spelling accuracy but also speed, composure and endurance after days of intense competition.
Parikh emerged victorious after correctly spelling 32 words during the allotted time. His winning word was “cashaw,” a type of pumpkin, which secured him the title and capped off a remarkable run at one of the country’s most prestigious academic competitions.
The annual Scripps National Spelling Bee brings together some of the nation’s strongest young spellers, each advancing through multiple rounds of competition before reaching the final stage. This year’s event once again highlighted the extraordinary preparation, focus and discipline required to compete at the highest level.
The championship round took place at Constitution Hall in Washington, where the finalists were challenged to perform under pressure in front of a live audience. The format of the concluding round added an extra layer of urgency, as contestants had to rapidly recall spellings while managing the stress of the moment.
Parikh’s performance stood out for its consistency and precision. In a contest where even a single mistake can end a championship run, his ability to maintain accuracy across 32 words proved decisive. The result reflected both his skill and his ability to stay calm in a high-stakes environment.
Gupta, who also delivered a strong performance, reached the final round after advancing through the demanding earlier stages of the competition. His appearance in the last head-to-head matchup underscored the depth of talent among the young participants in this year’s Bee.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee has long served as a showcase for academic excellence, drawing attention from families, educators and spelling enthusiasts across the United States. Each year’s winner joins a select group of champions who have demonstrated exceptional memory, language knowledge and competitive poise.
