Germany vs. Curaçao Prediction, Team News and Lineups for the 2026 World Cup

Germany will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Curaçao on Sunday in Group E, with the two sides set for a historic meeting in Houston. For Germany, the match is expected to be a major test of focus as they try to avoid one of the tournament’s biggest potential shocks. For Curaçao, it will be a landmark moment: their first-ever appearance at a World Cup finals.

Germany arrive in strong form and with expectations to reach the knockout stage. A four-time World Cup winner in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014, Germany have not reached the same heights in recent editions, falling in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022. That disappointment has increased pressure to deliver a much better showing this summer. Under Julian Nagelsmann, however, the team has built momentum with nine straight wins in all competitions, including victories in friendlies against Switzerland, Ghana, Finland and the United States. With upcoming group matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador as well, Germany are widely expected to progress comfortably, especially with the possibility that third place could still be enough to advance.

Despite not being among the main title favourites, Germany will view anything less than a convincing result against Curaçao as a setback. The squad includes several standout names, with Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz all expected to play key roles. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has recently returned from a calf issue, is likely to start. Havertz is expected to lead the attack as he looks to add to his international goal tally.

Curaçao’s qualification has already made history. Managed by Dick Advocaat, the Blue Wave topped their qualifying group last November and became the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup finals, both by population and land area. With fewer than 160,000 people, Curaçao’s presence in the tournament is one of the competition’s most remarkable stories. Although they are ranked 82nd in the world and are not expected to challenge the leading teams in Group E, they will take confidence from their achievement and from a strong squad led by experienced figures.

Curaçao’s recent results have been mixed. They lost 4-1 to Scotland in a pre-World Cup friendly at the end of May, but followed that with a 4-0 win over Aruba. Advocaat, now 78, brings major experience and will hope to organize his side well enough to compete against far stronger opposition. The team’s likely leaders include captain Leandro Bacuna, his brother Juninho Bacuna in midfield, and Tahith Chong in attack. The former Manchester United youngster has already shown promise for Curaçao, scoring three goals in his first six appearances.

On paper, Germany are clear favorites and are expected to dominate possession and create the better chances. Curaçao will likely need a disciplined defensive display and a strong performance from their attacking outlets to have any chance of frustrating the Germans. Germany are predicted to win comfortably, with a 3-0 scoreline seen as the most likely outcome.
