Carrie Preston Reveals What She Wants to Explore in Elsbeth Season 4

CBS has renewed Elsbeth for a fourth season, and the crime procedural is expected to return later in 2026 with more of Carrie Preston’s title character solving cases in her unconventional way. While specific story details for Season 4 have not yet been announced, Preston has shared one idea she would love to see explored: Elsbeth’s family background. In an interview, she said it would be fun for the show to introduce a parent, especially a mother, so viewers could see Elsbeth in a new role as a daughter and learn more about where her personality comes from.

The series has already shown Elsbeth as a mother, girlfriend, friend, and romantic partner, but Preston believes a parent-focused storyline would add another layer to the character. She also noted that bringing in family members is often a strong move for television shows, whether the relationships are warm or complicated, because it gives audiences more insight into the main character’s history and emotional life. Fans have also seen more of Elsbeth’s son, Teddy, whose engagement could create a natural opening for his grandparents to appear if the story moves toward wedding preparations.

Preston even has casting ideas for Elsbeth’s mother. She mentioned Mia Farrow and Bette Midler as possibilities, saying Farrow had previously played her mother in a stage production and could work again in the role. Preston emphasized that she is simply happy the show is continuing into a fourth season, but her vision for Elsbeth’s family is one she finds especially exciting.

Given Elsbeth’s history of memorable guest stars, there is growing speculation that Season 4 could include another high-profile casting choice. A family-centered episode or storyline would fit well with the show’s mix of character-driven drama, humor, and case-of-the-week storytelling. Teddy’s upcoming wedding may provide the perfect narrative opportunity to introduce Elsbeth’s parents and deepen the audience’s understanding of her life beyond the courtroom and police investigations.

Season 4 of Elsbeth is set to premiere on CBS this fall, although the network has not announced an exact air date. For now, viewers can revisit the first three seasons on Paramount+.
