James Gunn Uses Comic Book Logic to Shut Down Supergirl and Superman Fan Questions

James Gunn is embracing the kind of fan scrutiny that comes with launching a new DC movie universe, answering small but pointed questions about Superman and Supergirl with comic-book logic rather than dismissal. On Threads, Gunn responded to a fan asking how Superman can shave if his skin is invulnerable, and another asking how Supergirl can have pierced ears if she is bulletproof. His replies made clear that, in DC storytelling, there is an answer for almost everything.

For Superman’s grooming problem, Gunn pointed back to long-standing comic book precedent. He shared an old panel showing Clark Kent using his heat vision to burn away facial hair, reflecting the heat off Kryptonian material. It is a classic superhero solution: Superman does not need a normal razor when he can use his own powers and alien tech to handle the job. The explanation fits the playful physics of comic books, where extraordinary abilities often come with equally unusual everyday workarounds.

The Supergirl question called for a slightly different explanation, and Gunn tied it directly to the character’s background. He said that, as explained in Superman, the same way she can get drunk is by going to a planet with a red sun. He also noted that she was raised on a chunk of Krypton and did not even experience her powers until her teens. That detail helps explain how ear piercings were possible in her life, since there was a period when her body was not yet operating at full Kryptonian strength.

The broader takeaway is that Gunn is not treating fan questions as annoyances. Instead, he is meeting them with the same earnest, detail-loving spirit that comic readers have brought to these characters for decades. The questions may sound silly on the surface, but they come from a place of attention and investment. Fans who care enough to ask how Kal-El shaves or how Kara Zor-El got her earrings are already treating the DC universe like a real, functioning world.

That kind of specificity matters for superhero franchises. The most successful versions balance emotional weight with weird, charming rules about alien biology, sunlight, and powers that complicate even the most ordinary routines. Gunn has long shown an ability to balance absurdity and sincerity, and these responses fit that pattern. He understands that comic book movies work best when the universe feels both fantastical and lived in.

The next major DC release in James Gunn’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is Supergirl, which arrives in theaters on June 26. In the meantime, Superman and other DCU titles are available to stream on HBO Max.
