DeSantis Says New Calculator Helps Florida Homeowners Estimate Property Tax Savings

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has launched an online calculator aimed at helping homeowners estimate potential property tax savings under his latest proposal to reduce property taxes in the state. The tool is available on the Save Our Homes website and allows users to enter their home address to see estimated 2025 taxes, projected taxes with up to a $250,000 homestead exemption, and possible annual savings.
DeSantis announced the tool on Saturday, posting the link on X along with a quote that framed property ownership as something that should not involve permanent payments to the government. The website directs users to an official calculator and presents the proposal in detail, along with a “Myth vs Fact” section intended to explain the plan and address common questions.
The calculator follows DeSantis’ Wednesday unveiling of a broader proposal that would exempt up to $250,000 of a homesteaded property’s taxable value from property taxes. Homesteaded property refers to a homeowner’s primary residence. Under that plan, a home assessed at $400,000 would be taxed only on $150,000 of taxable value, reducing the amount owed.
The governor has said the proposal is part of a longer-term effort to reduce and eventually eliminate property taxes for many Florida homeowners. Supporters say the calculator gives residents a clearer picture of how the plan could affect their bills, while opponents argue the proposal falls short of DeSantis’ earlier promise to immediately end all homestead property taxes.
Any constitutional change tied to the proposal would need to clear a major legislative hurdle before reaching voters. It could appear on the November ballot, but first it must win approval from at least three-fifths of both the Florida House and Senate.
DeSantis has defended the proposal as more realistic and politically viable than a total immediate repeal. Critics, however, say the scaled-back version does not match his original pledge. The new calculator is intended to make the impact of the plan easier for homeowners to understand as the debate moves forward.
