Katie Boulter Stuns Elena Rybakina for Biggest Career Win as Emma Raducanu Opens Queen’s Club Campaign in Style

Katie Boulter produced the biggest win of her career at Queen’s Club, beating world No 2 and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in a hard-fought quarter-final that followed a punishing day of two matches for the British No 3. The victory marked Boulter’s highest-ranked scalp and the biggest upset by a British player since Johanna Konta defeated Simona Halep in 2017. Earlier in the day, Boulter had also beaten Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-3 to reach the later stages in strong form.

Boulter said the crowd played a major role in carrying her through the tension and fatigue of the day. She credited the atmosphere for helping her stay aggressive and trust her game in a match that swung dramatically after a tense opening set. Rybakina, who had looked in control for much of the first set while holding serve comfortably and creating multiple break chances, suddenly faltered at 5-5. A series of unforced errors and a double fault on break point handed Boulter the opening, and the Briton then served out the set. Rybakina responded strongly in the second set, but Boulter recovered in the decider and showed greater clarity and composure in the closing games.

The win was especially notable because Boulter had never before beaten an opponent ranked as highly as Rybakina. It also continued a remarkable rise for the British player, who has increasingly been delivering on the big stage. In a match between two tall, powerful servers, Boulter was the more decisive player when it mattered most, producing some of her cleanest and most assertive tennis in the final set to seal the result.

Emma Raducanu also enjoyed a strong day at Queen’s, defeating seventh seed Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals on grass. It was Raducanu’s best performance of the season and her first win over a top-20 opponent in more than a year. Her quarter-final opponent, Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova, had earlier beaten Harriet Dart 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. The winner of that match will face 18-year-old sixth seed Iva Jovic, who claimed her first top-five victory by defeating second seed Amanda Anisimova.

Friday’s schedule was heavily disrupted by rain, forcing a compressed and exhausting program after Thursday’s play had been washed out. With many matches delayed, players who advanced on Friday were required to compete twice in one day, creating a difficult scenario for the remaining contenders. By the time Boulter and Rybakina went on court late in the afternoon, the likelihood of finishing the full schedule had already faded.

Despite the pressure and congestion, British hopes remain alive at Queen’s. Boulter’s landmark victory and Raducanu’s return to the last eight gave home fans a memorable day, even as the looming Saturday schedule promised to test the fitness and recovery of everyone still in the draw.
