Manchester City Promotion Hopes Dashed in Magesi Stalemate, SuperSport Reports

Cape Town City failed to secure a place in next season’s Betway Premiership after drawing 1-1 with Magesi in their final Promotion-Relegation Playoff match at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The result left the former top-flight club at the bottom of the mini-table with four points from four matches, ending their hopes of returning immediately to the top division. Magesi, meanwhile, remained in contention to finish first in the playoff section and could still claim top spot when they meet Milford in their final 2025/26 campaign match on Saturday. The two sides are separated by just two points heading into that decisive fixture.
The match began cautiously on a sunny pitch in Cape Town, with neither side creating many clear chances in the opening 10 minutes. Magesi, however, looked the more direct and threatening team early on, repeatedly pushing forward and testing City goalkeeper Luca Diana-Oliaro with a series of efforts. City struggled to impose themselves in midfield and relied mainly on counter-attacks to create openings.
As the first half progressed, the home team started to settle and gradually found better rhythm in possession. Their patience was rewarded just before half-time when Therlo Moosa opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. Moosa finished from close range after a well-worked passing move and a goalkeeper save left the ball falling kindly into his path.
City went into the break with momentum, but their advantage lasted only a few minutes after the restart. Magesi equalised in the 49th minute through Mcedi Vandala, who made the most of a direct attack inside the City half. Vandala latched onto a precise through ball, rounded the goalkeeper and scored from a tight angle to silence the home crowd.
The equaliser shifted the balance of the contest. Cape Town City were forced to chase the game, but they found it difficult to regain control or create sustained pressure. Their attacks increasingly came through transitions and forward runs rather than structured build-up, while Magesi were content to stay compact and look for chances on the break.
In the final stages, City pushed harder in search of a winner, but Magesi held firm under heavy pressure. The visitors survived a late onslaught that included a stoppage-time effort which struck the crossbar, but they managed to see out the draw and take a valuable point away from home.
The outcome was a major blow for Cape Town City, who entered the playoff hoping to preserve their Betway Premiership status. Instead, the draw confirmed a disappointing end to their campaign and left them facing another season outside South Africa’s top flight unless they can mount a successful challenge in the future. For Magesi, the result kept their promotion hopes alive and set up a final-day battle for first place in the mini-league.
