Zema again criticizes Flávio Bolsonaro over ties to Vorcaro and says Bolsa Família “creates a generation of useless people”

Romeu Zema voltou a atacar o senador Flávio Bolsonaro ao comentar a relação dele com Daniel Vorcaro, em meio a novas repercussões políticas e econômicas em Minas Gerais e no cenário nacional. The governor of Minas Gerais used the episode to sharpen his criticism of the Bolsonaro family and to reinforce his broader opposition to federal social policies, especially Bolsa Família. In his remarks, Zema repeated a controversial statement that the program “forms a generation of useless people,” a phrase that immediately drew attention for its harsh tone and for the political message behind it.

The comments intensified an already tense public dispute. Zema has increasingly positioned himself as a critic of what he sees as dependency on government aid and as an opponent of political alliances he considers harmful or opportunistic. By linking Flávio Bolsonaro to Vorcaro, he sought to cast doubt on the senator’s judgment and on the motivations behind such relationships. The criticism was not limited to personal attacks: it also fit into Zema’s wider narrative that Brazil needs to reduce its reliance on welfare programs and promote stronger incentives for work, productivity, and private investment.

Bolsa Família, one of Brazil’s most important social assistance programs, has long been defended as a tool to reduce poverty and inequality. Zema’s remarks therefore reignited debate over the role of income-transfer policies in the country. Supporters of the program argue that it helps millions of vulnerable families meet basic needs, keeps children in school, and improves access to health care. Critics, including Zema in this instance, argue that such programs can create long-term dependence if they are not paired with job creation and broader economic reform.

The governor’s statement also reflects the political polarization surrounding the Bolsonaro camp and its allies. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, remains a prominent figure in conservative politics, and any suggestion of questionable ties or influence can quickly become a national controversy. Zema’s decision to publicly criticize him suggests both ideological differences and possible strategic positioning ahead of future political battles.

The use of the phrase “generation of useless people” was especially provocative and likely to generate backlash from social organizations, opposition politicians, and beneficiaries of the program. For many observers, such language goes beyond policy criticism and enters the realm of stigmatizing poor families who rely on state support. At the same time, it underscores how welfare policy remains one of the most divisive issues in Brazilian public debate.

Zema’s latest comments are likely to keep him at the center of political attention, particularly among voters who favor a more aggressive economic and social agenda. But they may also deepen criticism of his style and rhetoric, especially from those who view Bolsa Família as a necessary safeguard rather than a source of dependency.
