Was Taylor Swift Mocked by Selena Gomez for Pretending to Be a Knicks Fan?

Taylor Swift’s appearance at Madison Square Garden during the New York Knicks’ historic NBA Finals comeback has sparked debate over whether she is a genuine fan or a late-arriving bandwagon supporter. Swift sat courtside on Celebrity Row with friends Mariska Hargitay and the Haim sisters, all wearing Knicks-themed T-shirts, including Swift’s shirt reading “Stevie Knicks.” Her reaction to the Knicks’ Game 4 win made headlines, but so did the swift backlash from some New Yorkers who questioned her loyalty.
The controversy grew after fans and commentators began scrutinizing her connection to the team. Swift has long lived in Manhattan and has previously described New York as her adopted hometown, yet critics argued that her celebrity presence at a high-profile playoff game did not prove true fandom. In a city where sports loyalty is taken seriously, even a casual display of support can trigger skepticism, especially when tied to a courtside seat at one of the biggest games of the season.
Rumors also circulated that Selena Gomez had mocked Swift’s Knicks fandom when Gomez commented “lol” on an Instagram post about Swift sitting courtside. However, Gomez later clarified that she meant no disrespect and said she would never insult her friend. The clarification helped cool speculation about any tension between the two stars.
A more direct challenge came from New York sports journalist Monica McNutt, who was caught on a hot mic saying, “She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl,” before the game. McNutt later walked back the comment in remarks to TMZ, saying she now understands Swift is actually a dedicated Knicks supporter and even owns a game-worn Amar’e Stoudemire jersey. McNutt explained that her original comment was based on not having seen Swift attend games earlier in the season while she was covering Celebrity Row.
Despite the criticism, Swift appears to have the support of the Knicks’ media team and has been accepted by those close to the organization as a real fan. Her courtside appearance added another layer of celebrity attention to the Knicks’ playoff run and fueled conversation beyond the game itself.
Whether Swift returns to MSG if the Spurs force the series back to New York remains to be seen. For now, she is reportedly hoping Jalen Brunson and the Knicks can finish the job in the next game and close out the series.
