Chavit Singson Arrested Over Cyberlibel Case

Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson was arrested Thursday afternoon over a cyberlibel case, according to a police report obtained by the Inquirer. The arrest took place at his home in a gated village in Barangay Ugong Norte, Quezon City.

The report said the operation was carried out under a warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court of Vigan City, Branch 21, for an alleged violation of Section 4(c) in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The warrant was dated June 10, 2026.

The court set bail at P60,000. A relative told the Inquirer that Singson voluntarily surrendered and immediately posted bail after the arrest.

The police report and the source did not provide details on the specific cyberlibel complaint filed against Singson. No other information about the alleged statements, the complainant, or the circumstances of the case was disclosed in the available report.

Singson is a longtime public figure in Philippine politics and has previously held various government positions, including governor of Ilocos Sur. His arrest drew attention because of his prominence and the limited information released about the case.

As of the report, authorities had not publicly elaborated on the allegations beyond the existence of the warrant and the cited cybercrime law provisions. The development adds a legal issue to the public profile of the former governor, who has remained a familiar political personality in the country.

The case is expected to be followed closely, given Singson’s status and the nature of cyberlibel complaints, which have increasingly become a significant legal issue in the Philippines. The report did not indicate whether Singson or his representatives had issued a public statement on the matter.
