Go Plushie Flower-Picking at Cj Hendry’s Free Gardens by the Bay Pop-Up, June 10–14
Gardens by the Bay visitors in Singapore can now take home a flower — or several — through Flower Market, an immersive installation by Australian contemporary artist Cj Hendry that is making its South-east Asian premiere from June 10 to 14 at IMBA Theatre’s gallery space. The free-admission exhibition features plush versions of more than 30 real flower varieties, all displayed in buckets in Hendry’s signature playful style. Eight of the flowers are exclusive to the Singapore edition, including the Raffles’ Pitcher Plant, Singapore Lipstick flower and Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, Singapore’s national flower, also known as Vanda Miss Joaquim.
Hendry, who is based in New York, has built a global following for turning ordinary objects into oversized, immersive installations that reflect themes such as consumer culture, nostalgia, materiality and perception. Flower Market first launched in New York in September 2024 and has since toured Abu Dhabi, Sydney and Hong Kong. In Singapore, every visitor will receive one complimentary plush flower, with additional stems available for $7 each. The gallery also sells Hendry-branded merchandise such as tote bags, caps and T-shirts.
The exhibition has attracted interest from visitors eager to see how Hendry transforms something as familiar as flowers into collectible art. During a preview, events planner Chong Pei En, 26, said she had followed Hendry’s work online since 2014 and was drawn to the artist’s ability to make flowers feel “special” through childlike and playful design. The show is open daily from 9am to 9pm, with last entry at 8pm, and walk-ins are allowed subject to venue capacity, though pre-registration slots are already full.
Hendry is also bringing another project to Singapore: JuJu World, which runs at IMBA Theatre from June 20 to July 18. Described as the world’s first inflatable experience built around her collectible toy series JuJu, the show features a fluffy bunny-like character with a flower covering its left eye. For Singapore, JuJu appears in yellow for the first time, and limited 30.5cm-tall versions will be created exclusively for the local event and not sold elsewhere after the ticketed run.
In a press release, Hendry said she is excited to present her work in South-east Asia with IMBA, noting that the exhibitions reflect shared emotions and universal experiences ranging from curiosity and adolescence to nostalgia. Together, Flower Market and JuJu World bring Hendry’s distinctive mix of whimsy, scale and emotional storytelling to Singapore audiences, blending art, design and play in experiences that invite both participation and collectability.
