KL Rahul Left Unsold at ₹2 Lakh Base Price, Shocking Snub for India’s Star Batter

Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul went unsold at the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 auction in Bengaluru after no franchise placed a bid for him, despite his base price being set at ₹2 lakh. The result surprised many observers because Rahul has been in strong recent form, especially in the Indian Premier League 2026, where he was among the most consistent Indian batters of the season.
Rahul scored 593 runs in 14 matches in IPL 2026 at an average of 45.62 and a strike rate of 174.41. His campaign included one century and five half-centuries, and he also registered the highest individual score by an Indian batter in IPL history during the season. Given those numbers, his unsold status in the local T20 auction raised immediate questions about why teams did not show interest.
The main reason appears to have been uncertainty over his availability. During the auction, a franchise reportedly asked about Rahul’s participation in the tournament, and the response suggested that he might not be available for the full competition. After that, no team moved forward with a bid. Availability concerns often play a major role in franchise auctions, especially in short domestic tournaments where teams want players who can join from the start and stay throughout the event.
Rahul is not part of India’s regular T20 international setup, but he could still have been available for some matches depending on his national commitments. The Maharaja Trophy is scheduled to begin on June 20 and run until July 12. However, India’s international calendar overlaps with that period. The third ODI against Afghanistan is set for June 20, while a match against England is scheduled for July 14. Because of this overlap, franchises may have assumed Rahul would miss at least part of the competition.
That uncertainty seems to have affected bidding interest, even though Rahul’s batting form suggested he would have been one of the biggest names in the auction. His unsold status was therefore less about performance and more about practical squad planning. For teams in a tournament with a tight schedule, selecting a player who may not be available for the full duration can be a risk they are unwilling to take.
The development has sparked debate among fans, many of whom expected Rahul to attract strong bidding after such an impressive IPL season. Instead, his name went unsold, showing how availability can sometimes outweigh recent form and reputation in domestic league auctions. Rahul’s case has now become one of the most discussed talking points ahead of the Maharaja Trophy season.
